Scambaiting - The only sport a true geek can win

Saturday, January 06, 2007

"Greetings, my name is Prince Omar Kabouki, and I am trying to hide money in your account."

Chances are, if you're online, you've received an email like this. The opening might vary, but it always winds up with the scammer trying to transfer millions into your bank account, with the condition that you have to send them money to take care of "paperwork".

Most of you are smart enough to just delete these emails, but millions are lost yearly. The legal term for this scam is the Advanced Fee Fraud, or"419" (referring to the Nigerian Penal code that discusses Advanced Fee Fraud).

Even if you are a newcomer, much fun can be had and at the same time you will be doing a public service. If you are new to this game and need to know what scambaiting is all about, please click on the 419 FAQ link.
